What are your favorite plants? this weekend I finally got my mitts on a datura plant: a nicotiana plant (which is actually tobacco but smells so sweet on the night air): and a hibiscus with deep red flowers that are 10 inches across! And the zinnias in the front yard look like a 3 foot hedge. *grin*

my parents have rosemary growing in their yard and their dog runs through it to chase rabbits all the time. it's a pretty plant, helps in cooking, can take the dog torture without getting ruined AND makes the doggy smell good every time he goes out! best of all worlds.

great topic I love bamboos. I must have x or x species of bamboo in my garden. Also hellebores and euphorbias. My favorite vine in my garden is my Clematis armandii. There's also a phormium ed "Sea Jade" that I never get tired of looking at. Oh the list just goes on and on.

i love azaleas and fuschias. Don't know if you can grow those in Sacramento though.

one day, I will have a garden... in it you will find blue spruce, weeping mulberry, japanese maple, wisteria, several varieties of clematis, allium, rudbeckia, echinacea, bleeding hearts (Dicentra spectabilis)... grape hyacinths, datura (the white ones! did you know that these are very poisonous?), butterfly bush (Buddleja), lilac.. hmm. So many favourites, and I can't remember them all. OH! the plant I have trouble finding every year - pineapple sage (Salvia elegans) - it smells awesome! There will also be a water garden... I recently saw an old tuba set up as a fountain, which looked very neat.. in fact I might have to steal the idea. (shhh!) And I love having a citronella plant by the door, it smells great when the dogs rub past it (and keeps the pups smelling good too!) :)

TML - sounds wonderful Had a friend, who once she got a home, she carefully planned out the back yard and designed it herself with all the flowers, plants and even a small water garden. It was a small home in east end, and it was beautiful. I can just picture your garden from your description. Oh, and I like citronella plants as well, but I never have any luck keeping them going, they always dry up and die on me..

love love love hibiscus i havedifferent varieties going inarea of the yard. i also enjoy a nice gardenia bush and a star jasmine bush for the fragrance. i have some really cool groundcover ed stonecrop...green and dragon's blood (red) varieties. i have a potted gerbera daisy, and i'm getting ready to plant some multicolored caladium. we tried lilies, tulips, and glads for the spring, but only the glads worked out, and the slightest breeze would knock them over. great subject!

I adore the giant white bonnet flowers They come in pink too, cant remember their name but they muliply madly, flower furiously and are about x ft tall with xft square heads!

And the yellow and black daisies that are about x ft high. They are great growers and have offsrping constantly. I enjoy wild looking gardens and wild flowers, dislike perfect striped lawns, with their red mulch and sparce foliage.

Check your growing z... most of the plants the gals are mentioning are for zones x and x. Some plants that will grow in your zone will not thrive there so go visit a local nursery or do a little research on the internet. Starting with a good long range plan is very important. Plant in odd number groupings, and repeat to pull things together, use color where you want people to go, don't go crazy with focal plants, use evergreen foundation plants as your backdrop, layer the planting and try to use dwarf and or native species. With proper planning you can have something in bloom from early spring until very late fall, then I like to use a few pansies for winter color and I love to see crocus pop their little heads thru the snow. gardenia bushes I love everthing about them the smell and the pretty white flowers. You can smell them in the morning when thy are blooming in the neighborhood. My neighbor gives me the flowers I put them in a bowl with water. They last for x days or more making the whole house smell wonderful.
